Golf Glossary


To understand Golf properly and smoothly, Glossary is offered to you. Some very common words have special meanings for golfers. A short list of terms is given for your better understanding of Golf. Golf Glossaries are decked for the players of Golf or the viewers of television.

Some Major Golf Glossaries: 

Address: The position taken before a swing.

Airshot: A swing and a miss (one stroke).

Back Nine: in case of 18 hole golf course, the final nine holes are Back nine

Bunker (known as a “trap”) its that prepared area of ground, from which earth has been removed and filled with sand, water, or tall grass.

Birdie: One stroke under the par for the hole.

Bogey: One stroke over the par for the hole.

Club head: Where the ball is intended to struck, or the base of the club,

Drive: The longest type of stroke made with a wood or low numbered iron.

Eagle: Two strokes under par for a hole.

Fairway: Closely mown grass area between the tee and the green.

Handicap: A numerical measure of playing ability. The lower the handicap is the better the golfer.

Hazards: Water, sand traps, or trees - the Natural and man-made obstruction for making the golf game more challenging and difficult

Hook: If made by a right handed player, and to the right by a left handed player, a hook is a stroke which curves the ball.

Iron: A metal golf club numbered 1-9, with a flat, thin, angled face; Lower numbered irons are used for longer shots.

Match Play: Competition in which each hole is a separate contest.

Net Score: Gross score minus your handicap.

Par: The number of strokes a hole is designed to be completed

Putter: A club with a perpendicular visage for using near the green.

Stroke Play: Total number of strokes taken

Tee: A small, usually wooden (sometimes plastic), device made to raise the ball from the ground

Wood: A club with a large, rounded head designed for hit the ball over great distances.
